Kevin Sheldahl and I made the points in another thread that the public needs to be made aware that many police and search/rescue dogs have been Schutzhund-titled, and that sport people need to make more of an outreach to the general public (in much the manner that police agencies do DARE seminars with working K-9s). People typically have a high opinion of police dogs and this is mostly due to the efforts of police agency outreach.
What is needed more than anything is for the same general public to understand that Schutzhund, ring, KNPV etc. are part of the classical schooling of a working dog and have absolutely nothing in common with backyard so-called protection trainers or, worse, gang-bangers who beat on their dogs to make them mean. As things stand right now it is a very rare person (at least in the USA/Canada) who can make any kind of distinction between one biting-dog activity and another.
We sport people need to be doing more--a LOT more--to counteract this unfortunate impression.
