It's definately a good idea to register, even a pet. If you ever get the dog micro-chipped, the AKC works with those groups as well which can help you find your dog. The company I use actually links everything together with vet records so that if my dog ends up at a shelter for some god only knows reason, they have all her medical (and vaccination) history, as well as a way to track me down/identify me. It's also useful if you ever get any obedience titles (you can still do OB work at an AKC show, just not conformation) The longer you wait, the more it costs to register. If you are worried about someone stealing your dog then don't ever put the AKC tag (with he dog's registration number no less!) on the collar. Some people also put "needs meds" to deter thieves.

He is from my momfriend and she is also BYB in the area but I called her yes all her dogs are AKC registered. And from what she is aying he can be to.
But I went to the web site and I do not have all the information I need to register him. But I think I miss placed something.
I really dont want to show for competion like all the time. I just want another experence at something new. So I guess I would not go very high in the rankings anyway. And I would have to fine a trainer that could teach me the ropes.
I already told my friend no it would not happen.
I am not a breeder or a stud dog person if that is what it is called. And I am not starting now sorry.
I know for a fact leerburg has been doing it for year and he probaly did years worth of research befor he started.
So no I will leave that to the pros.
So at this point I am trying to get everything I need.
My mom got him from a friend/BYB.
But he is the best thing that has happened sence Jewel.
So I cant fault her for not knowing.

Stephanie,
As I recall, for you to register him the litter has to have been registered by the breeder. There is a form the breeder can give you that has the litter registration number on it. That's the number you need to enter into the website to register the individual pup. The breeder can give you this number, it should have been on a form she gave you when you purchased the pup.
Can anyone comment? Am I remembering this correctly?

Yup Rich you are remembering it correctly.
Stephanie, you should have gotten a form from the breeder that has all the necessary AKC information on it. Fill in the ownership transfer area. You will need to choose a registered name for your dog. Mail the form into the AKC and they will send you back registration papers for your dog with your name listed as the owner.
P.S. Pepper's registered name is Long Haired Chihuahua
"Peppermint Patty #23". So if you pick a name that someone else already has, they will just add a sequence number behind it."

She got the right paper to me about 20 minutes ago on my lunch break
It has all her info and then a section were she signed it saying she sold him to me at 9 weeks old. I think she just got the paper work back not sure. I will be sending it off after pay day on the first.
So the name can not be the same as his name already it needs to be different. And will he need to know his different name also?
Oh and my husband and I desided to change his name from shadow to Bruiser because shadow just did not fit him.

You can register his name to be anything you want. If you want to use his current name, that's OK. He doesn't need to respond to his registered name. I never call Pepper - Peppermint Patty.
If I remember correctly there may be a minimum number of characters to fill in for the name. I think "Bruiser" is a great name for a chi.

The breeder is required to register the litter with the AKC. The AKC then sends the breeder certificates for each pup that have the litter and the puppy registration number on the certificate. The breeder should deliver this certificate to the new owner when the owner picks up the puppy. You can then register your puppy on-line directly with the AKC. Some breeders check off the "Limited Registration" box that does not allow the dog to be used for breeding purposes (if you breed the dog then the the dog's pups won't be able to be AKC registered).
Showing dogs in AKC shows is a serious business and it is also very costly. Professional handlers are virtually always used and they chargeg big bucks. If the dog does not come from show stock (if neither parent is a champion), then it is probably not a good idea to show the dog. Also, neutered dogs cannot be shown in AKC conformation shows. They may be shows in all other types of AKC competitions such as agility and obedience trials.
Enjoy him as a great pet! Looks like an adorable pup! No need to worry about showing him.

I don't know about AKC but I've seen a UKC show and in that show, the owners I knew handled their own dogs and enjoyed it.
If I had a purebred dog I would probably put it in a show or two just for the experience.
Stephanie, do your research. If what Christine says is true, you might not have any fun at AKC. You can cross-register your dog at UKC and show at their shows. My advice is to attend some dog shows first to see how you like it.

There are some shows that are not as costly, you just have to look around. AKC's website will have info on it, as will local groups. Many local clubs will set up carpools, and there is a lot of fun to be had at shows. I've been able to show mine in PB work a few times, we are one show away from a CD title. It's not my "thing", really but it is nice to do OB in a HIGH distraction environment and get to meet other people in the dog world. You don't have to invest in a lot to go, with one small dog it's not as hard as larger or more than one dog. Even if you don't do well at all, it can still be fun, IMHO. A day with dogs is always fun to me

What you call the dog doesn't have to be the same or even sound remotely the same as his registered name. For example my dog is called Jerri Lee but on her papers she is LvDobes Kiss Me Deadly. There are owner/handlers in AKC shows that do well but a lot of people use professional handlers if they are really ambitious about showing and finishing a dog and that can get expensive in a hurry. The competitive sports like agility and obedience are much more owner friendly and are a blast to do with your dog.
