von = "of"
vom = short for von der = "from the" or "of the"
haus = house. vom Haus Mike would be of the house of Mike.
Each country also has their own way, in Holland/Belgium it would be "van", "van het" (or "van 't"), "van de" (or "v.d"). France (or South Belgium) would be "des", "de la", or "du", etc.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Every country in the world trains in their own language and names their dogs in their own language, except the US (maybe the UK too ). Still amusing to me. But on the plus side, it often helps distinguish the American bloodline breeders from those breeding German lines. American naming convention is usually something like "Polly's Fluffybutt Beefcake" or "King Tut's Fruitfly".
So really, it doesn't denote anything special between the different german naming conventions? So "Doggy vom Leerburg" and "Doggy auf Leerburg" are the same?
Correct. Its purely grammatical. Ofcourse, with the decision between von der or vom, or the other abbreviations in other languages, it's purely up to the owner whether he likes the sound of the abbreviation better than the longer version, since both are grammatically correct.
