Well, I see the advantage of the tapes. Which should I get? any recomendations? She is a 3 1/2 month old GSD. She is very receptive to learning, very beautiful and very smart. I am amazed at how smart she is. I think she respond well to training.
It depends on your goals. If you plan on SchH I would get the Flinks tape on Drive and Focus or the Tom Rose tape on Compition Obedience. With either you will need to make some modifications for dealing with a puppy. I used the Tom Rose tape for my new pup and it went well.
There is also the Basic Obedience tape that would be a good start.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
I bought the Basic obedience tape from Ed and can throughly recommend it. I have several books but being able to see what's going on is so much better than trying to visualise.
I also learnt where I had been going wrong and wished I had bought this tape when I first got my shepherd.
My dog was brilliant at the recall(I thought) until he took off after another dog and wouldn't come back until he was good and ready.
We had to do some serious training on recall under distractions. I am almost sure he's got it now
What I wanted to add that my GSD is not a working dog but I wanted a trained dog that I could be proud of. He comes everywhere with me - even to the local pub!
The only down side of this video is the naff music but I do understand that Ed is in the process of re vamping the videos. If you can ignore the music the content is brilliant.
I have all the tapes mentioned. IMO, Ed's basic obedience tape is the best for a beginner. Ed goes into great detail explaining the dos and don'ts of basic obedience and his breakdown of each exercise is good advice for new and old trainers. The flinks Tapes are fantastic wether you are going in Schutzhund or not, but I feel you have to have a little bit better understanding of the drives of a dog. The Tom Rose heeling tape can't be beat if your goal is competition obedience. If your a dog nut like most here, your goal will be to get them all. I'm trying!
Gwen, I glad to hear I'm not the only one that goes crazy with the music to otherwise excellent tapes. Sorry Ed, but it's like being at Disney World where you hear "It's A Small World" over and over again.
