I have no idea what happened, but it looks to me like Kodee has a nosebleed. We've been in the kitchen, and it was fine. He ate a raw piece of chicken while I cleaned his ear and put his medication in it (ear infection), and I noticed blood on the floor right after. I thought it was from the chicken, although it seemed like a bit much for just that. I cleaned it up, took Kodee out to potty, and came back in. A minute later, more blood on the floor. So I checked to make sure it wasn't coming from his ear, which it wasn't. I finally figured out it was coming from his nose. I thought at first it was coming from a cut or something on the side of his nose (where the nostril is naturally "split", if I'm describing it right), but I don't know for sure. I think it might be coming out of the nostril instead.
It's hard to tell by looking, as his nose is black, of course, plus he won't hold still long enough. I dabbed at it with some gauge w/peroxide, then some dry gauze. It's not gushing, but it's dripping fairly steadily. I crated him just to keep him from bleeding on the carpet until it stops.
I'm not too worried, but wanted to make sure this isn't a symptom of something I don't know about (if it is a nosebleed and not a cut). He was just at the vet last week for a checkup and ear infection - no problems other than the ear, which is much better.
Anyone's dog ever had a "spontaneous" (from what I can tell) nosebleed? Do they recur?
I have never had a nosebleed in a dog and I don't think they are common. You may want to call the local K9 ER or veterinary after hours number and ask for advice. They may want you to bring him in.
Of all the years I've had dogs, I've only had one that had several nosebleeds, but he was about 7 yrs old. Without getting into details now, I'd want to have it checked by a vet ASAP. If it's bleeding now, I'd go to the Emergency vet. If it's stopped, I'd try to hold off for your regular vet first thing in the morning.
OK, thank you everybody. Just a minute ago I took a flashlight and a treat to get him to be still, and got a good look at his nose. He has a cut just on the inside edge of the nostril. I have no idea what happened - I was in the room with him and didn't notice anything until it started bleeding. I'm very relieved that it wasn't a nosebleed - thank you for the advice!
