My 9 1/2 week old German Shepherd puppy has never shown fear and has very strong prey drive with tugs, etc. For example, yesterday when we had the leaf blower out in the yard, he first stood square and looked at it - then actually approached it with caution.
My question is this. When I take him on short leash walks he pulls then lags and is all over the place. How long do I allow him to do this before I start short tugs with "far enough"? I realize he is just a baby and I don't want to reduce any of the drive he has.
At this age, the whole world is new to him. I would walk him on a flexi and let him investigate all he wants. If I want to move along and he's found something fascinating, I'll offer something better (food or toy, heck, just a stick off the ground) to divert his attention and motivate him to want to come along with me. This doesn't have anything to do with squelching drives, but at this age, he needs to learn about the world. Every new smell is fascinating to them, so I let them explore.
