I go by the information cited in the link below -- and I do 45 days versus the standard 30 day interval. In my area that turns out to be 3 doses per year I think.
Okay, that is interesting...it says the tempature must be below 57 degrees for 30 straight days...that is probably why we don't see it much here...we are on the coast, but a chilly coast...we have a few warm months a year. Our nights are typically pretty cool...I'm going to pay attention to the temps.
What do you all give and do you have to get it from your vet?
Those are the averages for where I live...as you can see there are only 3 months of the year where the low is over 57 degrees. Only one month were the average low is 60 degrees.
This must be why the vets don't recommend it????
It could be Karla that it is just not prevalent in your area -- that would be great! But didn't you say before that there were 44 reported cases of heartworm in your county?
Bottom line is giving heartworm preventative is a personal decision and if you choose to go that route it hopefully will be based on the evidence available to you -- like the link I previously posted.

Yes, but our county is large...and there are parts (more inland) of Santa Barbara county that got hot. For instance, we are usually 10 degrees cooler then Santa Barbara which is just 12 miles north of us. So, maybe the case in SB county are the areas that are much warmer then Carpinteria. LOL I usually complain because the summers are too cool for me...but maybe it is a good thing. I will ask the vet how many case of heartworm he has seen in our town. We don't travel much with the dogs, so they really stay right here in our little area.
