This morning our 10 week old GS puppy went to the front door by himslef and scratched to let me know he had to do it!! First time!! Up to now I've taken him out - first carried him and then last week began walking with him to the door and outside.
I'll pass along how I got him to climb the steps this morning for the first time. I simply put a treat on each step up as he took the prior one. He didn't hesitate. I was behind him of course in case he didn't make it. Prior to today, he would go up about 4 steps and stop. My approach is probably not new, but hopefully it might be useful to someone.
Using Ed's tape, the pup is doing a fair job on sit, not as good on come (sometimes) and will down when I have his treat in my hand up to about 6 inches off the floor. I take him on 2 to 3 walks daily on a flexi lead. He's all over the place but I just let him explore new things and meet everyone I can.
It's been 32 years since my wife and I have had a "younster" in the house - it's really great.
Doyle,
Way to go!
Keep to the basics and take your time! use Ed's tapes and enjoy your new pup!

Doyle, it's a good feeling when all of those midnight trips to the outside finally show proof that something is working!! I have a 10 week old GSD and he just started going to the door and scratching also. But, I had better move quick or he's not going to wait for me! Keep up the good work with your pup!
Congratulations Dad! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Keep up the good work! My little 14 week old girl (today!) broke from our playtime and went to the corner of the yard designated for 'poopies' all by herself for the first time, off lead. Oh the things that make us Happy!...Have fun.
