I am hoping this board will help me to better understand how I need to go about introducing my dogs and becoming a pack leader for one of my dogs.
I have a westie(Wendy) in the house. I'm pretty sure she knows that I am the pack leader.
I have a JRT-mix (JILL)outside and she doesn't have any training or pack experience. She may be dog aggressive, but I'm really not sure. She was kenneled with her sibling until he passed last winter.
Due to bad breeding, he had some very serious skin issues that we were unable to control. When they were together they would sometimes fight, so I'm not sure what she will do with my westie if they were put together. Anyway, I am not happy keeping the JRT outside in a kennel. We have always been convinced that she was just too hyper and headstrong to bring in, but I'm wanting to prove to my husband and to myself that if I do this the right way she can be trained and socialized to be a good housedog. If I can give her the proper training then I can find her a good home. If she trys to fight the westie I won't keep her. But if they can get along I might consider keeping her.
I'm going to try and crate train the JRT, and also I'm going to order the basic obedience DVD and start training the Westie and JRT in basic obedience. I don't foresee much problem with the westie but the JRT is going to be a huge challenge. For now I plan to crate the JRT and follow the instructions on this site for laying the groundwork. I'm going to treat this as if I were bringing in a stray dog. As I introduce the JRT to the pack, should I let the westie keep her normal routine and keep the JRT in the crate or should the westie be put up. The only times they have been introduced the JRT is in the kennel and the westie running in the yard. The westie will run past the cage and hide in the grass and jump at the JRT. This is the same thing she does when she wants to play with me. I'm afraid the JRT will see this as taunting or if it is just play that if the fence weren't there the play would get fatally rough. I would appreciate any advice on getting them to know each other and what steps to take to make this as safe as possible.
