I have a new labrador puppy (9 weeks/male) and a four year old Shitzu female. My shitzu when petted almost always rolls over onto her back and exposes her belly for me to rub. The male lab on the other hand has yet to do this and when I try to get him onto his back to rub his tummy he resist it. Does this tell me anything about his temperment?
Russell, my puppy also would never roll onto her back for a pet at that age. Remember though, at 9 weeks your puppy is just learning his place in your pack.
I found that as my pup learned where exactly she stood in our family pack, she was much more willing to roll on her back.
Now, when she's in a down position she very willingly will turn on her side and expose her belly for a scratch for anyone in our family, including my soon to be 6 year old son. (our pup is 10 months old)
This doesn't really answer your temperment question; I'll leave that to someone w/ more knowledge than me!

You may want to ask your breeder if he/she performed a puppy temperment test on your pup and how he scored. Here is a link to a puppy temperment test that you can use. These are rather routine tests that the breeder normally performs to align the pup with the proper owner.
