Just wanted to let you all know that Star got in the car today! We spent a lot of time last night and this morning playing next to the car. She got to the point where she would actually go past it but only in a run.
This afternoon I spent 3 hours washing, waxing, and detailing the car. I scrubbed the tires and sprayed an oil on them. She paced nervously the entire time and still wouldn't go to the car but she would come up to me and sniff me every now and then while I was on the ground rubbing the wax off.
Finally, I had to run to the store, so I opened the car door and just asked her, "do you want to come along?" and patted the seat. She took a flying leap (a wide leap so as not to get near the tires) and jumped in. Getting out once we got home was the same. She jumped out and ran past the tires as fast as she could.
So it's not a complete victory, she's still afraid of the tires, but her desire to go for a ride in the car overcame her fear!
Thanks, everyone, for the great advice! I always learn so much from you!
Interesting. Molly had a fear of the car when I first found her. A lady I knew who fosters dogs agreed to take a look at her to help me figure out what breed/breeds she was. At first she flat refused to get into the car and I had to pick her up and put her in the back seat. The whole time in the car she kept her head between the seats planted on my arm. She was OK once we got there but on the way back the same thing. Once we got home she acted almost ecstatic.
She was dumped and showed up at our house so I figured she associated riding in the car with being abandoned in the middle of January. Now that she realizes car rides end up back home she loves riding in the car. Never have found out who dumped her but hopefully I never will. Not sure what I'd do to a scumbag who would dump a four month old puppy out in the middle of winter to fend for herself.
