I'm at the beginning stages of drafting up a will for myself should the inevitable happens a bit sooner than expected and I'm working in my pets (dogs, birds, aquatics, etc) should they outlast me. I've been able to find a book on the matter on amazon . But so far this is the only one I've found.
Has anyone out there already done this? Any particular components I should keep in?
My basic concern is that all of my animals do not end up euthanized, dumped at a shelter, disbursed through auction, newpaper, or craigslist, but rather if they must be disbursed will be done so responsibly. I've had a few talks with my Mom about what my wishes are for them "should something happen" but I want to make sure this is spelled out for her sake, their sake, and my sake.
I welcome any ideas, comments, etc as I start getting my thoughts together to take to the lawyer.
We have provided for all our pets (we currently have 2 german shepherds + 2 cats) every time we have occasion to revise our will. The most recent time was over the winter.
The individual designated has agreed to take care of our pets, we have left a designated amount of money outright for each pet, not terribly complicated.
This individual also has a key to our home in the event we are not able to reach out animals for some reason. She can go in and get them.
There are also several excel spreadsheets that can help you compute the cost of taking care of a pet.
Mine each have their own trust fund, per se, so that if someone were to assassinate me, they would have the means to continue to live the lifestyle they're accustomed to. I have designated guardians for them, but don't want the guardians to have to deal with the financial burden. So, to relieve them of that and more importantly make sure my dogs are cared for and fed the way I want, they each get a fund based on their ages, predicted lifespan, cost of food yearly, etc. Some cost a lot more than others; Widget is pretty easy, but Caleb costs a fortune in not only food, but keeping him enclosed somewhere. I can't expect someone to dish out thousands to build something to keep him in, so the amounts will vary quite a bit.
If their designated guardians use the money for anything else, I will haunt them.
