just trying to teach her how to walk on a leash. She is all over the place right now and she does a lot of jumping and running. I am not thinking of any corrections but self correcting would be nice because right now she is nuts.
Do you have an option to wear her out first? Like in a fenced yard or with some positive training (really wears them out more than you would guess.)
If you expel some of that crazy up front energy, then often it is easier to teach them to behave on a walk. With horse we lounge them first (run in circles on a 20 foot line) to get the initial energy and bucks out. Makes for a more relaxed animal and better concentration for horse and rider. Same applies with (especially) pups.
As for collar to use, I would stay with a flat leather collar for training for as long as possible. If I could stay with a flat collar for all of my dogs training with out having to add in prongs, DD collars, or e-collars I would. Gizmos work, but nothing beats not having to use them at all.
Good luck with her!
P.S. Six months is not too young for a prong... I just try every thing else first.
P.P.S. Is she a pet or some sort of sport dog? Like Mike said, it may change the answers.
