Hello,
I'm curious for those of you who have multiple dogs. I have 2 and generally walk them together. PitX in prong, GSDx in leather collar. I previously worked the GSD (Samantha) in a prong, I only use it intermittenly with her.
While walking both dogs, the PitX (Tyge) will need reminders to not put tension on leash.
I've started to take Type out by herself for more obedience work, and what I've observed is, by herself she trots right by my side on a loose lead, is VERY focused on me, and today did beautifully with all her commands!
Generally if I have both dogs, I go to a ball field, will secure one to the fence while I spend a few minutes working each dog individually.
Why do you think, without the presence of Samantha, Tyge is so right on???
Linda, it could very well be that Tyge is surging forward or walking ahead in order to lead Samantha/be the higher ranking dog between the two. It could also just be that she doesn't understand that she needs to/you want her to walk at heel when the other dog is present.
Does Samantha do well no matter what? If so I would take both dogs and work on teaching Tyge that when you are walking with another dog you still want her to walk at heel/loose lead. You can start by having them on opposite sides of you, if Samantha needs some reminders every so often or you prefer not to work alone have a friend walk with Samantha on the other side of you or other side of Tyge(both dogs in between the handlers/walkers) and just work with Tyge.
Jennifer,
Yes, Samantha is good no matter what. I don't mean that Tyge pulls, but by herself she seems much sharper and focused. I'd have to say also that Samantha is higher rank than Tyge. I have 2 females.
I guess as I'm type all of this, I'm realizing that I really need to work with Tyge individually. I have not done alot with her as far as taking her to the field by herself. Maybe it will also carry over??
Could Tyge just be somewhat distracted if Sam is the higher ranking dog and she is on the periphery while I work with Tyge by herself??
