I am taking in my 4 yr old male GSD to get hips and elbows x-rayed for the first time ever. Appointment is next week and the clinic can do OFA or PennHip. I was told that the vet will exam my dog and discuss with me which method is better in our case.
Since I am not a breeder my main reason is to check if I can excersise my dog vigorously like doing AD with bicycle or rollerblades/skateboard, hiking and agility.
So before I go for the exam next week, I would appreciate some input about OFA or PennHip in my case. Thanks so much !
Go to this article and scroll way down just past the picture that says Liquid Salmon Oil. After the "Testimonial" is a "Question" which is like your question and Ed Frawley's answer re: OFA vs PennHip. http://www.leerburg.com/hipart.htm
You should probably read the whole article as well, as Ed talks about the importance of positioning, etc.
OFA is the standard by which all working dogs that I know of are checked against. If I wanted a hip rating then thats where I would send it to.
I had my 4 year old GSD x-rayed recently to check for HD. His hips were so bad I didn't even bother sending it in for a rating with the OFA equivalent of Belgium.
Thanks for the input! Ed recommends swimming the dog for 1 month every day to tighten up the ligaments. I do not have the option to do swimming very often, so is there anything else I can do instead?
Can I still go hiking with him or play ball in my backyard for the month before the x-rays ?
