There is someone here that currently works with Mals in real life work, dangerous work. He has also worked with GSDs. He told me he wants to get a GSD for a quality he doesn't see in the Mals. Namely the loyalty and deep bond that you get with a GSD. So from him, someone who has worked extensively in real life scenarios with both breeds, he wants a GSD.
Wow.
I quoted this to the TD and the handlers at the PD, and the nicest reaction was "What a stupid blanket statement."
Of course, I don't know if LE counts as "real life work."

.... it is a horrible generalization. Not only do you have to take the individual dog into account, but also the handler. .... selecting a dog breed is a very personal thing and nothing irritates me more than people who make that same statement you just put forth. I hear it all the time and its incredibly misleading.

Interesting subject. I prefer GSD's mainly because they have a much better stronger bite in my opinion than a Mal. and make a better family dog since they are not so filled with energy but You cannot go wrong with either breed they are both awesome.Interesting that South Africa does not accept Mals ?? Wonder why ? Tom

Thanks again guys. I think it might be better that only gsd's are allowed otherwise me ego would've probably got the better of me and I would want a mal purely so i could TRY prove to myself that I can handle it...
SA is still quite behind and I don't think the majority of the people in KUSA(kennel uninion SA) even know what a mal is. I don't think i've ever seen one before. Our head trainer at our ROTTIE club has and trains a GSD so I think that says something about the situation of only GSD's being able to compete effectively in SA because of the poor administration of other scH organisations.

I have a 4yo Mal x GSD and she seems to know what a couch is for.....for lying-on with all 4 feet in the air
She was a bit of a handful at first, but now has a superb temperament, for the companion dog that she is.
I hadn't owned a dog for many years, but Ed's dvds helped me a lot, especially with her dog-aggression issues.
