Megan, why do you want a Mal? Do you know what you are getting yourself into with a Mal? There is ALOT more to it than the explosiveness and energy level.

Ugh, the hair from my Husky X is horrible! I brush him every night, and STILL end up fillin a plastic grocery bag daily. Not to mention the clumps on the floor. More than once I've thought 'dead mouse'. Nope, Maverick hair! The acd just evenly coats the bed, lol.
As far as personality, I'm not sure if a Mali or GSD would be best. Still deciding. Like I said, I prefer the Malis, but we'll see! It won't be for quite a while anyhow. I'm due next month, and I don't need a newborn AND a puppy at once!

Mike,
I think a lot of is the energy level also. I want a dog that I can run with, and hubby wants a 'sturdy' dog he can play with. We had a Dane for a while, and he misses being able to rough-house with a dog that can take it and give it right back.
Also, I like the slightly smaller, yet sturdy dog.

Well, once you get back on your feet after the baby, I would definately check out clubs and speak with people who own the breeds and get a feel for what you are getting yourself into.
Both breeds are wonderful in their own way, you just need to see firsthand which one suits you and your family.
Good luck with with the new family member :-)

Ingrid,
Yes, I plan to attend some clubs/trials as much as possible! I'm meeting with Sandy tomorrow, so I may just fall in love with the GSD then. I've always liked them, but still gravitate towards the Malis. But then again I gravitate towards the lesser-known breeds or less-popular colors too. Josh likes the typical black/red 'saddle' pattern GSD. I like the dark Sables/blacks.
Then again, our 2 are completely different breeds, but have basicaly the same markings!

Megan, Malinois are completely incomparable to GSD's. I would do alot of research on the breed before you go that route. They don't really make the best dogs for beginning handlers, at least, not if you get a good one, and I wouldn't want to own anything less than a good Malinois or you will be combatting a ton of other issues. There are a number of threads on the subject of Malinois for first time handlers and why they aren't generally the greatest choice for a beginner, all posted somewhat recently too, so I'm not going to type it all out again
But really, if energy level, size, and ability to roughhouse with the dog are your requirements, then you have quite a ways to go in research. It is one thing to see the dogs working at a club, it is a whole other thing to live with them, especially the first 2 years. Having lotsa bandaids around the house doesn't hurt either

Megan, I would like to second Mike's posts. Malinois are not for everyone. I'm not a beginner with dogs and I'm thinking I may not be up to par for a good Mali. But we shall see soon, I'm told I do fine with the Mals I have been around and (briefly) handled.
There is a LOT to a Malinois. I think I know what you mean when you say your hubby wants a dog to rough house with. I'm not sure I'd recommend that kind of "play."
With serious dogs, "taking it and giving it right back" are not happy play time activities. Revving up a mal(or a good number of other dogs of other breeds) in that manner is a great way to get someone bit. Great Danes are not Malinois (and are not GSDs) and visa versa

Mike,
Don't get me wrong, I know there's a lot more that matters than that! (I'm at work, so my brain is turned off at the moment, lol) I'm one that's known to research something to death, even if it's something I'll never end up doing! I've read (most of) the recent threads regarding Malis, and know they're nothing to be taken lightly! I may very well end up with a GSD, then (several years) later, MAYBE end up with a mali. We'll see!
I still have a lot to learn about the different protection sports, as I haven't decided if I want to persue SchH, FR, just a PPD, or all of the above. When it cools off here and all of the clubs start back up working the dogs, I plan on making a nucense of myself!
