I can't remember the name of the website (big help I know) but Randy Hare had some unique boxes he uses. They appear to be successful with them. Mine are just two cubes, the top cube being smaller than the bottom one. Each has a 4 inch hole so the dog can get his nose into it. The odor goes in the bottom box. I build them myself. I don't really use them that much as I prefer to start the dog off searching actuall areas. The front of an automobile, or desk drawers make excellant boxes.

I've imprinted scent work with a salt shaker and a reward. Salt shaker (with scentin it) in one hand and food reward in the other. When the dog looks at the salt shaker it gets rewarded. It will connect the dots quite fast and soon you can get an alert/down/ etc at the source before the dog gets rewarded. Once the dog "gets it", the reward becomes a high value item (tug). Drive goes up and the salt shaker can be set down a couple of feet away and the process begins again. In a short time the salt shaker can be hidded and the dog will alert on it.
From there, as David commented, the hiding place can be more realistic.
This imprinting can be as short as 10-15 mins with some dogs.
This can all be done while sitting in a chair. I'm old ya know! ;-)

It's funny you mention the "salt shaker". When I was in research so many years ago, that's exactly how we started the dogs. Before putting them in the environmental chamber, we'd teach the odor using a salt shaker. All dogs were food reward.

Well, my dog is new to the street and I have made the mistake of letting him see the reward come from my hand too many times..I was looking for an idea on how to make his ball pop from a box...An idea that wasnt expensive like some of the little neat gadgets they have...BTW, David what is the environmental chamber

One thing we have done to help with that in cadaver is to have someone else have the toy. Actually several people can have the toy. The dog looks at source, probably looks at you and bam the toy hits the source from an unexpected location.
I think some people also have hidden a toy with the source to help with this. Obvsiously there you have the problem of the toy has odor so it could complicate things.

Brent, in my experience, all but the Golden Retrievers of the world, at some point, figure out where the reward is coming from. The response on source is nothing more than a conditioned response. While having someone else through the reward, as Nancy suggested, can help, it's the response that has to be rewarded. In short, and I don't know how big your problem is, withold the reward, until the dog has responded. I'm saying this with the thinking that this is already a trained dog because of your comment of being a "new street dog".
An environmental chamber is a large enclosure, in a laboratory, where the the type of odor, the amount of odor and any/all distractors can be controlled. It has anywhere from one to three (the ones we used) ports, where odor can be controlled. It also has a mechanism for dispensing the reward.
