Jenn,
The people I've known who use the oral flea medications have been pretty pleased with their effectivness. I don't recall hearing "It doesn't seem to be working anymore" with them, like you do with the topical stuff.
With that said, an extremely flea-dense area can overwhelm even the most effective medication.
CapStar, as mentioned above, starts working within minutes and is handy if your dog is overrun with fleas. The little suckers fall off dead right before your eyes.
The other thing I forgot to mention is Fleabusters......they will treat inside and out plus under the house.....they use benefucial nematodes and a combo powder in the house that is so safe you don't have to leave when the apply it. We had to call them out this year since the topicals all seemed to have lost their power....got a 1 year contract so anytime I feel paranoid about bugs I call them to come out and re-treat the yard. I have been really happy with it so far. I think the main culpret here has been an explosion in the squirrel population.......my next step is to start trapping the little vermin and taking them somewhere else!
Here's a link explaining beneficial nematodes. We use them in the nursery business to control certain pests, but I had no idea that they could be used for flea control also.
I will say front line had no effect for me I am in texas in a apartment no less.
