I have a 12 week old Presa Canario puppy("Cleo"). She has been in our home for 1 week. I would like to train her in personal protection, but also have her be a "home" dog and a dog I can take with me to work, the beach, the park, etc. Is this possible? What can I do with her now to facilitate this? I am following Ed's advice and doing minimal corrections with her (only positive reinforcement now). We live in Hawaii, and while there is a small local schutzhund club, our access to a variety of trainers is limited.
By way of background:
I have purchased Ed's videos "Your Puppy 8 Weeks" and "How to Raise a Working Puppy."
We are feeding her the raw food diet.
She is very bright, having learned to come, sit, wait at the door, out and be house trained in just one week. She also seems to have very strong prey drive: she will chase just about anything from balls to kongs to birds and proudly prances with whatever "prey" she captures. She loves "hunting" a towel on a string. She is very curious, not easily startled and resilient. She has started barking at anyone who comes around the house. In addition, she is very person oriented and loves affection; I cannot get up to get a glass of water without her following. We have an 11 yr old male Rottweiler and she is more interested in my wife and me than in the Rotty. She has an excellent food drive.
Any advice, suggestions, tips, or comments on how to raise her to meet whatever her potential is, would be greatly appreciated.
My husband took his French Ring (not the same as PPD though) dog with him EVERYWHERE. The only problem he ever had was from the dogs eating seatbelts if he left them alone in a car too long.
For some reason it never occured to him to crate the dog in the car, LOL.
Cleo already comes with me in the car. She sits curled up on the seat and doesn't cause too much trouble. I'm trying to expose her to as much as possible while she's still young.
When I met my husband he had a personal protection trained shepherd that also went EVERYWHERE with him. That was a great dog though, maybe the exception to the rule.
Thanks Alyssa,
I'm trying to expose her to as much as possible while she's still young.
That's the key. Sounds like you're off to a great start.
Be prepared for some slight changes in her personality in a couple more weeks. She'll become a little more energetic and start exploring and getting into typical puppy mischief as the newness of living with you wears off. But overall, she should turn out beautifully if you keep on the way you are, and follow Ed's training techniques.
