Edith, welcome! I think it's both...
The great thing about this forum is that the many very experienced folks here willingly give their advice to folks like me, with very little experience (but gaining more every day!).
And there is a wealth of information to be found in Ed's articles and dvd's for just about any aspect of dog training/ behavioral issues...

She's an Australian Shepherd - although not typey. Up till now, my main training focus has been "don't be such a spaz!" Most of my class time and public walk time has been focused on having her control her fuzzy head and heel or sit or stay "okay" while life goes on around her.
She's got a few random bits - a semi-decent heel, half-baked finish, cock-eyed front, not bad directed retrieves, very good manners for bathing and grooming, she has mastered not trying to nip people during a figure eight, and after a two-hour muzzled session with a remarkable vet she is okay with him and his clinic.
Because she sometimes thinks people are a threat and she should bite them, we have almost no off-leash work and I don't really know where she is with her recall. Which is making me a spaz!
She's probably about two by now, give or take a few months. When she was picked up last year, and turned into rescue, she had full teeth but no tartar and had a recent litter (or an extreme and unlikely street dog hysterical pregnancy) but my overall sense was that she was under a year. She just seemed -despite being nearly hairless with teats hanging down and grossly underweight - puppyish. Especially when she dropped the feral slinking and started acting doggy.
Her tail is 3 inches and her dewclaws are barely nubbins so presumably she wasn't born on the street. Someone shot her at some point, and while I'd like to think that she was not someone's dog when that was encapsulated instead of treated - who knows?
