I have recently had a shift change at work which has allowed me to bring my 2 year old GSD with me.
There is a 3 hour period at the end of my shift during which she needs to be crated in the car. She gets pretty upset, whines, barks, she won't lie down and chew a treat, but just stands there watching for me to come back. She also pants heavily and I suspect she has done some chewing on the bars of the crate (they have been slobbery when I have gone out to check her).
She also tends to do this when crated other places such as my mom's house. She is ok at home.
I am not sure if it is possible because of the weather but can you cover the crate to obstruct his view of out the windows during that time?
I know my dog will stare anxiously out the windows for hrs for me to return given the chance but will rest/lay down more readily if there is no way to see out.
Are you in a safe neighborhood where you could crate the dog in the car at night? Could you give your dog a meal in the car crate?
My 15 w/o pup had to be crated in the car the first two weeks I had him at night b/c he wouldn't stop crying. I didn't want to disturb the nice family who was letting me keep him at their appartment while I finished up college. He also got most of his meals in there too.
Now, the car is the only place now where he is 100% quiet. The house is a different story.
Would it be a good idea to just leave her in there except for potty breaks until she becomes calm (like wou would with crate training in the house)?
I'd make sure she continued to get adequate exercise, which will encourage her to be calm, but basically, that's the approach I would take. Provided the dog isn't being frantic to the point of risking self-injury, I'd crate the dog in the car as much as possible.
I'd also experiment with treats/toys, to find my dog's absolute kryptonite. It took awhile with Danke to find the perfect Kong stuffing to keep her occupied in her crate. Turned out to be salmon-flavored Philly cream cheese.
Oddly enough, she is much better tonight. She has been in the car crate with the windows down for 2 hours and hasn't barked or whined, even when someone walked by. My car is parked right outside my office window, so i can easily hear her. I will try leaving her in there for my whole shift (except for potty and a couple of runs) this week and see how it goes.
