I listened to Ed's podcast on marker training but not sure how to incorporate it into to my dog now that he's nearly 2 and knows lots of commands. Do I just stop giving commands such as sit, here, down etc or do I give the command, because he understands it perfectly and then say "click" and give treat?
Criag, I think the first thing you need to do is 'load the clicker'. In other words, develop the association between your word/click to getting a reward/treat. Are you using a clicker, or just saying the word 'click'?
In any case, the dog needs to associate the sound that you choose with getting a yummy treat, before you try to incorporate it into your training. The link below provides a good description of how to load the clicker.
Once you've done that, you can use the clicker to mark his behavior, even if it's a command he already knows. Or, you can use it when he offers a behavior that you like, but that's not associated with a command...
