I feed Timberwolf. We alternate between Dakota Bison and Wilderness Elk & Salmon. When we run through a bag, we switch, to vary the protein profile.
Once or twice a week, I switch her evening feeding of kibble for a totally raw feeding.
I guess I'm somewhat strange in the way I guage what to feed my dog. If she doesn't eat it all in one sitting, in a reasonable amount of time- too much. If she wolfs it down, and then an hour later is hanging around her bowl, whining, too little.
Feeding her this way has kept her on the lean side. I've had dogs that needed their food measured and weighed, because they had zero ability to self-monitor their intake. They'd eat until they were sick. With this pup, we've been lucky, she knows how much she needs.
We have a 9yo GSD with EPI, diagnosed 4.5 years ago. If it is EPI, Viokase-like enzyme supplementation does the trick in 90% of EPI cases. We feed a diet of chicken quarters from Wal-Mart and Innova EVO + Enzymes. He's been doing well for over 4 years now.
Sarah,
I don't remember the exact name. Vet said it was spiral shapped. The bacteria name might of had "spir" sound it.
If the metronidazole doesn't clear up the loose stool, I'll get the TLI test and fecal culture just to put my mind at ease. If its negative, i'll have to start switching up food. I'm lucky to have a all natural pet store close by with tons of options.
Dramatic weight loss, from 88 lbs down into the low to mid 60's, in spite of increased food intake. Frequent yellowish/oily diarrhea (from undigestible fats). His weight loss was getting to the point where it was dangerous. To clarify, we didn't just put off the TLI test, we & our vet didn't really know what was going on, but through some research, found out.
Keep in mind that Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), Irritable Bowl/Collitis, and Food (Wheat/Corn) Allergies can all happen in conjuction with or as a result of the EPI. Metronidazol is often part of the treatment of EPI. If it is EPI, non-fat plain yogurt or some other sort of probiotic can help control the SIBO.
Well, the metronidazole didn't work. I started it last wed, and he had on and off loose stool throughout. Also on wed, I started giving him a few heeping tbls of plain yogurt a day, and put him completely on Canidae.
Rob is still gaining weight each week (2-3lbs). I guess its TLI test and fecal culture, here we come.
Be aware that Canidae has very recently changed the formula of all their foods and this new formula should be on store shelves starting this week. If grains are a possible culprit or simply exacerbate your problems you may want to look at their new ingredient list. They have diversified their grain content from just rice to include many different grains. I would be suspect of the new formula's grain content. Ingredients listed on dog food are listed in order of amount. When the grains are split into multiple different grains each one on it's own does not amount to more than the meat listed before it, but the total grain amount possibly is more than the total meat content. http://www.canidae.com/new-formulas.html
