Re-listening to basic dog obedience Ed Frawley mentions that he doesn't let his dog urinate when the dog wants to, he, Ed, controls that.
When I walk my dog he will stop and pee and if I don't stop he will pee while I drag him. How does Ed do it?
He says "ah ah" or "no" to the dog and gives a slight pop on the leash while the dog is still sniffing and get ready to pee, not while it is actually peeing. I guess make sure he doesn't actually have to go, though.
I think the key is to catch the dog before it starts to pee. I.E. don't let it stop in the first place.
I have 3 male dogs, none of them mark, so I am just saying what i saw in the video. Hope this helps.
One of the best tools in the dog owners tool box, is to learn to *read* your dog. *Know* what the dog is *about* to do.
Once you can predict what your dog is about to do, it is easier to preempt behavior than it is to correct it; eg, the dog is about to urinate, about to stick his nose where it doesn't go, about to ignore you, etc.
What I have done is teach them to go on command first before I try to stop them from going. Then when your on a walk you can direct him to where you want him to pee and give him the command to go. I think that way when you interupt them with that no or ah ah, or leave it they'll know what you are interupting.
