Today, for only about 5 minutes I watched a VERY secure, happy, well adjusted 4 1/2 mo. old GSD Hit a large, sleave sized tug like a freight train and hold. Numerous times. He was teathing, thus leaving blood on the tug so the owner stoped it, But the dog loving it. No agitation was used. He saw the helper, the tug and hell to hold back.
Do you long time SchH people see this very much?
This was natural. I know the owners. No way would theyforce anything on a dog this age.
I'm by no means a "long time SchH person", but I have a male just like you described. He would want to bite and tear a tug apart, while teething, and actually got "back-talkish" with me when I wouldn't allow him to, and he had to see other dogs doing it. Part of it was his extreme possessiveness of anything he deems a toy, the other part was that he is very driven, it seems he loves the bitework and the tracking, now if we could only get him to love the obedience.
Yes, you see this quite often if the pup is bred from strong sport lines. It's like the behavior is hard-wired into their little pea brains - as soon as they see the tug or sleeve for the first time, they know what to do and can't wait. And the genetic calm grip is god-given from birth in many sport dogs these days; it appears to be a highly heritable trait.

ok, so explain mine then....he's not from "sport dog lines", being a mixture of DDR/Czech lines taken to a Pohranicni straze bitch.
I got him to train for a PP dog (to protect my family while I was away) and chose this breeding specifically for that reason. The thing I'm thinking is, that he's got good BALANCED drives and a "through the roof" pain threshold, that's why teething didn't bother him.
