I live in WA and I am the proud owner of a 6mo old Mal. I was hoping any one may have experience with pet Insurance. Who is a good company has good coverage or who is not. I don't need coverage for the normal things i.e. shots regular check-ups etc. I think I should have coverage for the "what ifs". Any input on this will be a great help.
I looked into it about 4 few years back, but decided that the money I would spend on premiums was better off being put into a savings account for those "what ifs". The list of exclusions were very extensive for my breed. In those 4 years there has been money spent at the vet but the reality is that there has only been one "accident" that would have been covered (not sure who fed that dog a big sock or why he ate it ).

By in large most pet insurance I find to be a rip off with so many loopholes you could drive a bus through them. Most people are better off taking the $50 they'd spend on the premium and dumping it into what ifs pile in their basement (or bank account). Usually pet insurance only covers things that are accidental... and will not cover illnesses, dogs over 7 years old, genetic defects, diagnosis testing, or anything related to breeding or sporting. One company wouldn't even cover intact dogs or certain breeds.
I have Petplan and am happy with it, customer service is great and reimbursement was simple and fast (2 weeks). My plan costs about $550 a year (top level plan), I was reimbursed a little over $300 for an accident within a month of having it. Here is a link to what they cover:
I also have got a PetPlan and I`m more than satisfied with it. You can learn more about this insurance on PetInsuranceFinder. There are many reviews and comments from other customers so you can get different points of view.
I had originally look at Trupanion because it came highly recommended but once I saw the price, I just couldn't do it. For my breed of dog, with a $500 deductible, they wanted $125 a month.
Instead I opened a separate bank account and have an automatic transfer of $100 go over to that account every month. If what is wrong with my dog is going to cost more than $5000, I'm sorry but I won't/can't do that. I figure anything more than that, it must be something serious and how good a quality of life will my dog have at the end of it?
I love my dog but there has to be a good quality of life. That is something my breeder has been drilling into my head since I got my first dog from her.
