My previous dog was TERRIFIED of anything that sounded like a gunshot or a bang. Is there a good way to desensitize them to this?
The breeder of my current pup started desensitizing him to gunshots and fire when he was 4 weeks old. If he hears one now, he actually goes towards it to check it out. I was throwing whole packs of firecrackers in the street today, and he just laid in the yard about 15 feet away with his ball watching them.
I just desensitized Molly to fireworks. She had never experienced them before and she's not a very reactive dog so it was fairly easy. She's like your pup now, she actually seems to enjoy them. Since your older dog is afraid of fireworks it might take a lot longer than it did for me. You may need to start with some simulation that you can control like a fireworks screen saver or fireworks on a video. Start at low volume and do some OB stuff. Treat for the OB at first.
One caution about fireworks screen savers. A lot of free screen savers come packaged with viruses and other malicious software. Most of my business is removing this junk. Get a good antivirus and anti-malware program if you are going to install a free fireworks screen saver. I use AVAST! antivirus and MBAM (Malware Bytes Anti Malware). Google them to find them.
Just found a site with a good fireworks screen saver that checks out clean. Here it is if you want. Just make sure you download the right one for your operating system.
