I adopted two dogs from NC Rottie Rescue. I have had Grace for about 9 weeks and Sam for about 4 weeks. Grace is a 1 yr old APBT. Sam is a 1 yr. old Rottie. Both are spay and neutered.
Gracies foster mom always used a doggie door for her and let her enter and exit at her free will. I do not. I leash both and take them out to their designated place to go. I dont know how Sams foster mom did things. I am sure that she did not have a doggie door.
So far the house training is going really well.......BUT The two dogs dont know how to tell me that they have to go outside. Therefore I am having some potty issues in the house. Most is urniation and not that often just often enough to frustrate me. Poo only twice. I take them out after they have been in the crate for no matter how long.
When i take them out I have them sit infront of the door and I tell them "go potty". I open the door and they dont move untill I tell them to come. Each one is taken speratly to the place to "go" and I tell them there too "go potty". they do both and I praise them. (they are on a big porch, while one goes the other waites there for me to take there and vise versa)
The problem is i dont know how to teach them how to tell me when it is they have to go out.
I would appreciate the advice.
Thank you
I have a friend who has put a big jingle bell on a ribbon by her door. Every time she takes a new dog out, she jingles the bell. The dogs soon understand that if they need to go out, they just need to move the bell with muzzle, paw or any other body part. It's like a "reverse" door bell.

How is it going?
When I have newly-adopted dogs, sometimes it takes me a while to see their signals.
If you can tether one to you for an afternoon (and the other at another time) a couple of times, I think that you will start to see the signals they give much faster than when you are trying to watch two at once.

I Started to notice some signs with Sam. When i was sure that he needed to go out i asked him "go potty - tell me" and he gave me a small grumble. I marked it. Now he tells me with a grumble when ever i ask him to "tell me"
As for Grace we are still working on it. If i take one out to go potty the other always goes along.
I hope that i am doing this right.
