My GS is a little behind on her heartworm medication. Will someone tell me a little more on heartworm medicine and of any known side effects and natural alternatives. Thank you !!
Hello! Thank you for the response. 2 months behind. We have been out of town for about a month and 1/2 due to my granpa's passing so its been a whirlwind for us. I have had her since she was 18 weeks old !!!
It is also important to note that the monthly oral medications are actually effective for 45 days and not 30. The once a month figure comes from the assumption that most pet owners will not be able to keep track of a 45 day schedule and will find “once monthly” easier to remember. By giving the pill every 45 days instead of every 30 you may be able to eliminate an unnecessary dose or two. No need to give more medication than is called for.
Just wanted to make sure this didn't get looked over by anyone looking at that link. Its a good schedule should you use heartworm preventative.

Here in southern CA coastal cities, the vets say they 'rarely' see heartworm here in animals who don't travel to places at higher risk. So I have never, in 20 yrs of having dogs, given heartworm prevention unless we go somewhere that seems risky. Is that dumb? Can I judge this based upon the fact that I never 'see' any mosquitoes on us or flying around?

I'd get better info on your particular area than "rarely seen."
For example, the recent surge in foreclosures all over has led to pockets of elevated mosquito activity around, say, cul de sacs where several houses are for sale and pools are not maintained.
