Right, but his formal recalls are actually pretty fast. And he will come just fine when I ask him too. I do use food reward, and he is doing okay with the eye contact, but is getting better every day. After I release him, he does not want to play with me he just wants to go smell whats in the hole over there or who peed over here, or that stick looks fun, etc. He just does not seem overly excited to play with me. I'm trying to build a better bond with him. I suppose that just comes with time. I must say one of my biggest flaws is trying to rush progress. I have to stop and think for a minute and tell myself he's only 9 months old.

Have you tried tethering him to you all the time, and only let him do what you want him to do? Keeping him crated when you cannot be with him?
Maybe he has too much freedom and that is why other things are more fun?

Matthew,
I would definitely do everything I could to control the training enviornment. If your dog is hanging out with other dogs at home I would seperate him. I've trained quite a few dogs that responded well to that within the first 48 hrs. of seperating them. They are social animals and therefore they have social needs. If you give him no choice except to meet them through you instead of another animal, you'll have better luck in the training.
Yes Carol, I started that the first day I got him. And once in a while I was letting him out with my older dog, always with him on a line. I have stopped that and also I have had a kennel for him next to a fenced yard where I let the other dog run around, but I have stopped that as well and I did see a difference. Seems he's Mr. Independant.
