Barring injury and theft I'd much prefer a dog with sense enough to come home if it wanders off. That said I had a rescue beagle who would just take off down the road never to be seen again. She was also an escape artist. She got out of a kennel with an electric wire on top and bottom of the fence. She also took a purebred basset along and got him killed by a car. I finally found her trotting beside the road five miles from home over a month later. It would have been interesting to have had a GPS on her just to see where the stupid thing hung out for that month.
All other dogs I've had have had the sense to at least come home for dinner. So far Molly seems the best of the bunch. She's kept in the yard through police and firetrucks and just about every distraction you can think of. It might even be hard for someone to steal her. Today a neighbor came over with some bushes for me to plant and I went inside to find something to put some plants in that his wife wanted. Molly knows him and has played with him before but she refused to stay out in the yard with him. She had to follow me instead.
Even with that I have ID tags on her collar and I'm going to get her chipped as soon as I can afford it. As for a GPS however I don't think so. For the price and the cost of continued service it just doesn't seem cost effective and the chances of a dog being within a cell coverage area around here are remote. I have a hard enough time hearing my voice mail. I have to drive a couple miles to do that.
Another reason to get ID tags for your dog is this place where I got Molly's. Supposedly proceeds go to rescue and fostering.
