Yes, we were standing in the yard when the incident happened. I didn't see any signs of warning. It was an issue with a toy. The older dog had given the toy up, the Boxer jumped on top of her after that and then everything happened very quickly. Both dogs ended up on top of the old dog and we had to pull them off. My sister did not do any formal training with the dog. I think she just has a different personality than we do and the dog responded to her as the leader. I desperately want to set the right tone in our home. My mother actually needs to establish herself as the leader, as she will remain there with the dogs after I move away. They usually respond to her as such, but that day she was standing directly next to them when all of this happened. It was very alarming.
Dog fights can seem very sudden and without warning- but they aren't. You have to know how to read the dog's body language.
When two dogs are sniffing each other, tails held very high (easy to see on the GSD), and standing quite stiff- if one dog doesn't back down pretty quick, a fight is about to happen.
Read the articles. Ed explains the how and why of all this, very well.

I'd be sure to share everything with your mother, too, if she is the planned owner of this pack.
It's great that you are going to get her and the dogs going in the right direction. You'll find a wealth of info in those articles and especially the DVDs.
