Another question- I just read some of the links provided to Kori's post.
Does it follow that if some antibodies are detected (high or low), that the dog's 'memory cells' have at least produced some antibodies IF the dog has been vaccinated previously? Or not necessarily because the first (or however many previous vaccinations) may not have 'taken'?
Sorry if these are ignorant assumptions- I never was very good at/excited about biology or chemistry, lol.
You have the right to refuse vaccines being given to your dog. In my state a 3yr rabies is required by law, however, you can ask for a titer in lieu of a shot. Plus, my question is....what is going to happen to you if you don't give it? Also, why is it that people get vaccines during childhood but, not as adults unless they are going to be heavily exposed to a disease, so why do domestic animals have to have yearly vaccinations without question?
I do have a dog that kills raccoons and such so I will definitely keep up with his titers.
I spoke with my vet about this very thing yesterday and we left without vaccinations.

1. For rabies (the only legally mandated vaccination), some municipalities and states accept a titers test and some do not. I'd get that info before the vet appointment.
2. Great point. For other vaccinations, here is the Dr. Jean Dodds minimal vaccination schedule for folks who have vaccinated dogs and whose vets push annual "boosters." Nice to have info about the rapidly-changing protocol.
