My experience with suicides has actually been to the contrary.
I've had suicides go out of their way to avoid causing additional paint to those around them, and even to the First Responders. Responding to the scene, it was clear that a deliberate effort was made to minimize the trauma to whomever found the body.
Which makes me think there is some merit to the thought that he may have wanted to keep scavangers away.
Or another thought is that he may have planned to "take the dog with him", but didn't have the heart to do it when the time came.
We'll probably never know his reasons for taking his own life and leaving the dog. There are two different definitions however on "rational thought". From a legal standpoint (ie police, first responders and courts) rational thinking is seen as the ability or lack of ability to make decisions based on their future consequences.
Clinically however while someone is still capable of thinking of consequences their whole mindset is based on a false interpretation of reality. These two definitions are debated in our court systems almost daily. This is why someone who for example thinks God has commanded them to take the lives of their entire family can still be determined fit to stand trial even though their actions and reasoning behind their actions look like they are obviously completely (for lack of a better term) loony.
As someone who has had some body close commit suicide, I can say; there is no accounting for 'WHY'.
I'm more in tune with Mike, the dog showed more loyality and grit than the owner ever did or ever thought about, otherwise we wouldn't be reading about it.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.
