I ave been training my gsd with food but decided to try using a ball on a string. He went crazy for it, he did what i asked of him but was really hyper. He usually shows a good atitude with food but seems more controled should I keep using food or train him with the toy?
If you have no interest in protection work you do not have to train in prey drive (although I do not recommend it)
If you want to do protection work and your dog has prey drive it is a mistake to not use it. You can train a dog with food for obedience and tracking but it does not help you in proitection. You can use the preliminary prey drive work as the foundation to your protection work.
Dogs that don’t have prey drive either have to be trained with food or with compulsion.
If you want to learn to do the prey work correctly - get the video I did titled Training Drive Fouc and Grip with bernhard Flinks http://leerburg.com/101e.htm
