don't know if this is any help -- when my GSD was a puppy -- 6 mo. or so, he had reddness, bleeding on his lower jowels. Vet diagnosed a kind of parasite or fungus -- don't remember -- and prescribed a cream to put on several times a day. That cleared it up. But his jowels have always been a little loose after that compared to other GSD I've had, and he takes more water away from the bowel than my other dog . . . . . he's 2-1/2 now.
Thanks to all, I just returned from dermatologist and she confirmed what I thought, Astro has a very prominent lip fold on both sides and it is now healed and we just need to clean folds every few days with baby wipe and if it gets irritated use neosporin. She said if it gets to be too big of a problem it can be surgically corrected. This is also why he is such a sloppy drinker. I am sooo happy that it is nothing really sinister as he is just the BEST dog ever. Thanks again, Jack
