I started taking training classes and there is an aggressive Aussie in the class. The owner seems to be doing a good job to correct the dog for it's actions, but when commenting to the head instructor about how the dog lunged at a person in Home Depot for no apparent reason, the instructor's comment was, "You're going to be a dead dog".
I can only assume the instructor knows what she's talking about and in her opinion, is worried about the future of this dog.
My problem is that when I asked if the dog was neutered- suggesting that maybe that would cure some of the aggression (I have no idea if that happens, but was just offering a suggestion)- the owner said, "No, and he never will be. He's going to be our stud dog. We'll just keep him kenneled until we need him".
It seems very irresponsible to possibly carry on this problem in future litters.
Is that a real possibility?
There are three constants in life: Death, taxes and the love of a dog.
This always raises huge flags for me. Rarely does a dog not have a reason or not show signs before taking action. The owners sound clueless, so it wouldn't be too farfetched to assume that they simply missed the signs or the reason.
Yes it can be genetic. While I have no issue with breeding for genetic aggression depending on the purpose for the breeding, it sounds like these people have no clue about breeding at all and have no business to want to breed the dog, whether or not he has the perfect temperament.
Thank you for the replies... I would understand breeding for aggression if there was a purpose too... but can't imagine what that purpose would be for an aussie.?
From talking with the owner, I know who the breeder of this dog is and sent them an email to ask the same question - sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong - but figured I'd get more information before passing judgment on this person.
The breeder's response was that it's none of my business.... nice.
