I can't get over this line: "At one point, McGahey contemplated extracting DNA in hopes of proving Forrest isn't really a pit bull. The plan was discarded because the city ordinance is based on physical characteristics, not genetic makeup."
Aside from the main point of the story, I hope this doesnt turn out to be another case like that one in New Jersey where people from all over rally in support of the poor dog only to find out the owner is a moron.
And as usual, the fault is completely on the dumb owner:
That owner stated..."I'm Forrest McGahey's father," McGahey said. "That's my son. I'm going to do everything I can to save him."
However, the dog ended up in the shelter because, according to the report "was found wandering city streets for the second time in three months."
Typical owner, says that they'll do "anything" to save their dog.....except for keeping them properly restrained.
Moron!
Exactly Jeff - that dog could have lived a good life with just a little fore-thought by the owner.
Instead it's on the quick path to the needle..
Absolutely crazy.
Yeap, I agree with you guys. Given the severity of the ban, WTF is the owner thinking? Save the dog, fine the owner, and send the dog to a PB rescue. I'm sure some place will take him, especially with the supporters he has now gained.
I am confused. If they euthanize all pit bulls and that is their policy, why is everyone rallying around this one particular dog? How is he any different than all the other "Pit Bull Type" looking dogs that are being put down? Maybe this attention will help in getting the law changed, BSL is bull.
He thought of getting a DNA test, well last time I checked (may have changed) they did not have a DNA for Pit Bulls, so if you got it tested, it would come back inconclusive. They only have so many breeds they can identify.

The dog ". . .was found wandering city streets for the second time in three months. . ." so the law kicks in, which ". . . calls for euthanization after a second offense except in extreme cases." The owner can't be responsible enough to keep his dog contained, so now he gets lawyers involved.

Maybe, but this is not the type of dog owner you want to hang your hopes on.
