I am so traumatized right now and I can't reach any of my friends for support! I have two Blue Heeler/Border Collie puppies 5 mos and we go hiking in the forest reserve every morning. I'm e-collar training them but I always put them back on leash when we are returning up the paved road back to the car (out of the forest), which is where we were this morning when 4 rottweilers loose came running up the hill and charged us even though I saw them coming and turned back into the woods and started yelling for the owners to call them off (I didn't see any people yet).
They came at us from behind and started attacking my puppies! One in particular was trying to kill the more submissive one. He just wouldn't let her go, was trying to pick her up in his mouth by the back and shake her. I was kicking him and kicking him and he kept charging and I'm shrieking "Call Your Dogs Off!" and there were no people in site.
About 3 minutes passed and my little Mauka was just curled in a ball whimpering and when I reached for her she snarled at me too, afraid she was still going to be attacked and then they effing came back and this time 4 men were walking up the road (I'm off on the trail about 100 yards) and I start yelling again and the guys said "we don't have to call our dogs off, we're hunting (birds) and we have licenses!"
OMG!!! Can you believe that? I yelled at them that their dogs just tried to kill my puppies that were on leashes and that is never ok for another dog to charge an innocent dog and they said the same thing again! I told them I was calling the police and they truly don't think that there was anything wrong with their dogs running loose and attacking!
I've called the police and animal control and I hope they get slapped with a big fat fine, but more importantly animal control will deem their dogs dangerous and they will be required to keep them penned and on leash.
I feel so helpless, traumatized and sick right now. I read a few days ago how Ed says once a puppy is attacked they never forget so now I've got at least one that will be screwed up for life, and it was a situation beyond my control! I've been so careful about not letting them have contact with other dogs or people because they are really hyper and they think everyone is a playmate. I guess that idea just changed forever with them.
Is there anything I can do while the incident is so fresh to help them not be scarred for life when it comes to other dogs?
