Lucky is almost 6 months, female, and has been going thru the teething stage fairly well. I have given her some bones to chew on when I'm not outside with her to occupy her so she won't dig holes. But the past few days when I go to feed her she seems more interested in finding the bone than she does the food. I remove the bone and encourage her to eat but she is still slow to eat.
Is this normal behavior for a dog teething ? Or is it related the her maybe coming into heat soon?
Thanks for the replies. I have ended up with a brand called "BLUE" for her food, it's got a buffalo on the front. I'm trying to keep with good stuff but a budget does hinder things sometimes. She seems to be pretty healthy with a occasional mixed loose and firm poop.
I doubt the lack of food interest is related to coming into heat. It isn't impossible, BUT, I'd look at a lot of other things before I came to that conclusion.
First, I'd examine whether or not the dog was happy with the food it was on.
How long has it been on this food?
Second, I'd determine whether or not the dog was being overfed?
Do you free-feed?
Third, I'd figure out if the dog was getting enough exercise.
You mentioned hole digging as another problem. Could it be the dog is a tad bored?
Finally, I'd wonder if perhaps this dog doesn't like kibble, and would prefer something it could tear/crunch/etc...
Could you try tossing the dog a nice chicken back, as an experiment?
Alyssa that is the kind I'm using. I feed twice daily about two hand fulls. Morning feed is around 6:30 and evening is around 4- 6. She has been on kibble since just before 8 weeks but it was intially a different kind.
The digging has stopped, knock on wood, and we generally exercise in the evenings at least a hour and finish up with a short walk. If I've got time I'll throw in some kind of new command.
The best way I can describe her body weight is I can "pinch" about a half inch of skin. That probably doesn't describe her well but you don't see ribs and you don't a hanging belly.
