how much exercise is ok before we reach the point of needing a "day off," so to speak?
Kodee & I just recently started going for a 4 mile walk every a.m., and although we slowly built up to it, I was wondering if he needed a day off here and there, or not? I know it's good for people to take a day off now and then to let there muscles recover, but what about dogs?
I do not run every day and if it is extra hot or I am going extra long I leave the dog at home. On those days I still take the dogs hiking or a long walk.
Luckily my dogs do not go insane if they have no exercise but I do not think it is their preference.
I do think you are right about forced running. Especially if it is on hard ground.

It depends on the dog, the age, and any physical conditions. My older spaniel would say yes... let me nap in after a day of going to the beach, plodding along after my dad and mom for miles. I envy her ability to relax after a busy day.
My other dogs would say no. I do try to alternate for the lab running days vs swimming days and she seems to be coping with that idea well.
Dear Kori: Kodee looks so great! Getting big!
I take sunday off. But do other things, like maybe a car ride or review a new trick. It really depends on the weather. Here now is very hot. Its 92 sometimes by nine in the morning. I will be leaving in a few minutes to take Bindi for her morning walk.
But I also have a treadmill and can use that if I need to.
Bindi loves to go for a walk, but I don't walk 4 miles with her. I wish I could. She wouldn't want a break, but she gets one anyway on Sunday. That way she isn't expecting to walk every day. Sunday is also her "meaty bone" day. I give her a giant soup bone to munch on.
Does it seem like Kodee needs a break?
My other dog Cody needs alot of exercise each day or he is on the ceiling! so I try and keep him active every day doing something. He uses his treadmill every day.
Thanks guys. No, he doesn't seem like he needs a break, but I don't know what I'd look for if he did, other than sleeping more than usual or something. We increased our walks to 4 miles almost every school morning, since my 2 oldest ones started back to school last Monday. Today I left this a.m. without him, and he looked at me like "What? Aren't you forgetting something (someone?)" LOL. So I guess I won't worry about giving him a break. Thanks!
