I got a new foster a few days ago.
His name is freckles he is a dalmation pointer mix.
I have him tell he finds a new home. He was a stray every skiny when he first got to the shelter.
My question is. He has not been eating his food. I do put it in there kennel let them in if they don't eat after 5 minutes they have to wait tell the next meal. Get fed twice a day. Morning and night.
I know he won't starve him self. But will he eat on this sheduale? He has to eat on a sheduale with 4 dogs 2 cats. And a litter of moms to one of the dogs. I have to keep a strict sheduale. So I can't and won't bend to him but he has not ate in 2 days he is drinking ok though.
He is on parie kibble. We will go to raw after next pay day
I think that is an excellent suggestion Jennifer.
Most dogs love the smelly stuff, ie; sardines or mackeral.
It is really good to because of the Omega 3's in there.
I also think it is a good idea to at least give twenty minutes for the dog to eat. The adjustment might be stressful on him.
Also, getting him some excercise in the morning and at night help build their appetite as well. Can you walk him in the morning before he eats?
They all walk 2 times a day a hour before breakfast and 2 hours after dinner.
He ate at the shelter but they would put the food down and leave it down. Tell next feeding time.
All the dog share a room all have there own kennels expect for the mom and pups she is in myne room. So one bedroom is the dog and my office is in there. So every eats at the same time. I could give him 15 at the most main reason is because we really keep to a pretty tight sheduale around here.
I have to work 8 to 10 hours a day on the computer so there sheduale is pretty set in stone.
I am going to lap it with some chicken tonight see how he does. They do get salmon oil and amega 3s in there food every meal also.
I will lap it tonight and see how that's works
if you're volunteering w/the shelter, can they help you by providing food or something? maybe so you could give him a bit of what he was eating there, and the food you're giving him now.
i know when i adopted luc, it took him a little while to start eating all his food immediately. he definitely went through a transition, and you might just need to be patient through that.
He may not want to eat if you are in the same room with him.
It might help if you put a blanket or towel over the crate to give him more privacy.
I agree that 5 min. probably isn't long enough for a new dog in a new place.
If you are fairly sure he won't poop in the crate you could leave the food with him overnight as a last resort.
I have one dog who is a sensitive eater that I do that with. He never poops in his crate.
