I have an 8 month old GSD. She does great at the trainer's, but when we get home, she's a knot head. She pulls on the leash, and sometimes she's aggressive toward people. She barked and snarled at the trainer's husband, father, and step mother. Sometimes she goes right up to people just as friendly as can be.
My trainer uses praise, not treats, for rewards. She also used a fur saver instead of a prong. Should I go to the prong instead? Use treats instead? I'm at my wit's end.
How long have you been training the dog? Are you training for pet obedience? When you say she does good at the trainers does that mean she does good for the trainer or just at the trainers. Does the trainer use corrections? Do you have other dogs? ,,and how old was the dog when you got it?
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Yes, I am training for obedience. She does great for the trainer. Yes, she uses corrections, and I do the same thing, but with different results. I've had the pup since she was just short of 8 weeks old.
As far as the barking/snarling incidents, I'll stop to talk to somebody while we're walking, and she'll get that hair on her neck standing up, barking, backing up, and I'll try to get her to at least sniff the person. It's usually men that she doesn't like. But not ALL men.
After my initial post, we went for a walk with the prong on. She was a different dog. She didn't give me a hard time about anything, didn't bark at anyone, did her commands perfectly. Any ideas?
I just got an email from the trainer. She's telling me to get her spayed. She's seen her for a total of 4 hours. She doesn't live with the dog. I realize that it's her job to know dogs and their temperments, but couldn't she be jumping the gun a little on this one?
