Katherine - I am not sure if you hit reply to my message because it was the last message in the thread or it was an actual reply to my message but I know the Canidae recipe has changed. I just have not had any problems with the new recipe so I am not going to write off the food just yet.
I pay $12 for 40 pounds of chicken backs, and $28 for 40 pounds of 80% ground beef/20% organ meat mix. I supplement with Nupro. It's cheaper than feeding kibble.
As far as it being a hassle, it's not when you get your process down. I bought 14 stainless bowls at Fleet Farm for $2.39 each. I mix up 14 meals (2/day) all at once. Then I refrigerate 3 days worth, and freeze the rest. Every time I pull one out of the fridge, I replace it with a frozen one. So I'm only making up food once a week this way. It takes about 30 mins of work every week.
Obviously you'll probably need another fridge and freezer to do this. Search craigslist, people give them away. I got a huge stainless commercial freezer from a restaurant for nothing, and I already had the spare fridge.

ONLY if you can get it.
Where I live, the CHEAPEST I can get chicken backs/necks is $1.19/lb. The most expensive kibble on the market is not only cheaper, it's more convenient. Though it is bad for their teeth.
When I win the lottery, I'll feed raw. Until then.... some of us are stuck with kibble.

I'm going through a meat distributor that provides product for restaurants/hotels/schools. I searched everywhere and finally found these guys. But, you're right, if you don't have anything like that in your area, kibble is cheaper.
