Why do dogs bury food...even when they're hungry??
The tent thread reminded me of this question. When we go backpacking or even camping Kota will use his nose to snub soil over his kibble bowl. Even if we go 9 or 10 miles per day, he refuses breakfast and won't eat till lunch. What suprises me is that Kota is a HUGE chowhound! Does anyone else have a dog that will do this?

My old Tiekerhook dog used to "bury" stuff in the corners of the inside of the house. He would act sort of secretive, looking to see if I was watching him. If I was not looking straight at him, but out of the corner of my eye he would take the item to a corner in the house, put it down, use a paw to "dig a hole" stick the thing in his pretend hole, then use his nose to "cover it up". He would look around real stealthy like, then slink away. If at anytime during this procedure he caught me looking or heard me snigger, he would look up at me with a completely disgusted air, stop and walk away.

Max the bloodhound does the exact same thing, only if I do not see him do it, and walk by it, he will dang near knock me over to get it and take it to a new corner....the DORK!!!

I still run into bones my last dog buried around the place. Or they could be from the one before that. lol
I assume they are from my last one though. She'd spend all day putting it here, putting it there, no that wasn't good enough, move it to that spot. Settle for awhile.....nope get back up, dig it up and start the routine all over again. She'd never be satisfied it was safe. Many times even after a walk or some work or even the next morning, the first thing she'd do is go and move that stupid bone again! The dog was impossiby possessive, god love her.
Cassie (my present dog) could care less, she finishes with it...she walks away......done.
Go figure.
