We have a GSD male on the way from a local person by us. He is currently 4 weeks old and won't be coming home until early August. At what age would you start taking him for a walk and how hold can he handle?
As soon as vaccinations are ready and the safety period is over. Depending on the vet, they can go out by 2 - 2.5 months. Try to find a vet you can trust and ask everything about his vaccination, walking, kind of food, quantity, number of meals/day, additional vitamins and minerals, which are important from the very beginning.
As for the duration of his walks, I don't know any rule, for example 1/2 hour today, 40 minutes tomorrow etc. Just look at the pup and try to see if he gets too tired - young pups get tired quickly, they sometimes fall asleep while playing - but they recover quickly. You would probably get him out often every day, considering the housebreaking. I think fixed hours walking program is very good for the pup, at least 3 walks per day, including playtime.
