I had a Belgian that we used in protection. Nice dog. I doubt most departments would be interested in one for work. The biggest thing that would be a concern is the hair length and grooming required to maintain the coat.

You may want to check out this link to an open discussion forum on working belgians -- I think she breeds tervurens (not sure - her web page was only about Montana -- I know she (Kim Gilmore) has another site but I only spent a few minutes looking since I dont have or want Belgians. She claims there are about 40-50 doing SAR in the US. A lot of BC's with similar coat do SAR work and have seen some damned good ones at that. I do not know about who is doing what in the other areas of scent work.
