Scenario: I walk toward puppy to put him in his kennel and he runs.
He is 4months old. I have been told that you never want to chase your dog around. He has been doing ob work on a lead, does great, however I dont want to use the recall when he is not on lead and I dont want to chase him. Only food works to coax him into his kennel. What other methods would you use? I have a kennel command ,but i dont use compulsion (only food)for now. Does it sound like I need to start compulsion? he knows the command.
Dan, you may have tried it already but try making sure that you send him into the kennel on a "high". For instance, right after he's done something you expected him to do, try encouraging him into going into the kennel as part of the praise and reward process. I've tried this and my pup seems to think that going into the kennel is all part of the game now.
Unfortunately I've seen many so called "trainers" put the dog into the kennel after it has done something wrong and thus the kennel becomes associated with a negative experience. The command "kennel" to the dog becomes "uh oh, I made my master mad so now he's going to come over, grab me by the neck and throw me into that box".
Put the treet in the crate and have him crate. Then treat AFTER he is in. After several repitions of this, tell him to kennel with out placing a treat and treat after he is in. When he is consistant, don't treat every time he goes in. Vary the schedule for the treat and don't make it consistant. When the pup is a little older he will probably start to go in on his own if the crate is left open.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Thats exactly how I did it and it won't take long if you do it right.
It's amazing though....I can show someone a full SchH 1 OB routine and they will be like "thats nice" and then when I say "kennel" and my boy runs right into his crate they are like "oh my god, thats amazing". They are more impressed with the kennel command.
