My 7 month old (neutered) male terrier has started chasing away all other dogs I come into contact with, other than my older female - if he thinks they are too close.
eg: We take our dogs over to our friends house and they have 2 dogs. My little male will growl, snarl & try to chase away the other dogs if they get too close to me.
eg: We walk off leash early in the mornings on a property and sometimes meet other people & their dogs - and he does the same if the dogs come up for a sniff etc.
Is he being protective? does he see himself in charge? How should I handle this?
Thanks

Julie, first I would suggest not letting him off leash in an area where he may come across other dogs. Being a typical terrier that doesn't know his own size, he could get in deep s()!+ with another loose dog that doesn't like being growled at. His temperment will determine how he handles a corection. Some terriers, like other breeds, will fight back with a correction. Others will go flat. My JRT can't handle a heavy hand without freaking out (fighting, snarling at me) because of weak nerves. With him I just give a quick correction and redirect his focus. He minds very well but I know I can never totally trust him because of his nervy temperment.
Yes you are right - I have concerns about his safety, should he pick on the wrong dog. Maybe his behaviour is tolerated at the moment because he is only 7 months old?
He sort of gets in their (the other dogs) faces (stands on his back legs & sort of pushes the dogs away).
This is not a dog park we go to, but a well kept secret off leash bush area. It's a good place for them to let off steam - and is well away from any roads etc.
On the odd occassion I see another person with a dog, I call mine away and we take another path - but a couple of regulars like to come and have a chat etc - and the dogs have a sniff.
I'll put his lead on if it looks like we will be meeting another dog & give him a firm "no" with pop when he tries to act pushy.
